What to Pack for Travel: A Comprehensive Guide

Usually, the destination and the season of your traveling, dictates most of your choices on what to pack regarding clothing. I know though that packing for travel can be a daunting task, especially when you're not sure what to expect from your destination. You can always use the bellow guide to help create your own packing list so you can keep track of what you have and eliminate any stress. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or an extended trip abroad, here's a comprehensive guide on what to pack for travel:

1. Travel Documents:

This includes your passport, visa (if applicable- check this online), travel insurance documents, and any other important documents related to your trip such as a PCR test r Vaccination certificate if still required by your destination. Make sure to keep them in a secure and easily accessible location. I for example, give everything to my wife. She is the most secure and easiest accessible.

2. Cash and Credit Cards:

It's always a good idea to have some cash and credit cards on hand for emergencies and unexpected expenses. Make sure to keep them in a secure location and avoid carrying all your cash and cards in one place. Always keep some back up in your suitcase, or a separate bag, in case something goes wrong.

3. Clothing:

Pack clothing that is appropriate for the weather and activities you'll be doing. For example, if you are about to join a Yoga retreat you should pack comfortable, athletic and light clothing that will allow you the freedom to move and breathe. Consider packing versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched, and dressed up or down. Don't forget to pack comfortable shoes, socks, underwear and sleepwear. Keep in mind that some destinations have a generally smarter dress code, and hotels often have dress codes for the entrance to their restaurants during evening dining, so make sure you check the guidelines and pack accordingly.

4. Toiletries:

Most of the online platforms that offer you rooms, either from a 5* Hotel or below, including apartments, usually include small packs of toiletries to a greater or lesser extent. However, if you don’t want to travel with full size toiletries, maybe consider picking up travel-sized toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, and deodorant. These are easier to carry with you and you don’t have to worry about getting things through passport control if you opt to shop for them at your departure airport – also handy in case of a flight delay or any other emergency situation! You may also want to pack sunscreen and insect repellent. Having said that, if you can’t, or forget, most tourist destinations where these products are needed, have mini-markets offering supplies often at a very reasonable price.

5. Electronics:

Pack your phone, charger, camera, and any other electronics you need. Consider bringing a power bank to keep your devices charged on the go. Make sure that you are carrying most of your electronic devices in a bag which provides you with easy access, since you are going to be asked to remove some things, like phones, tablets and laptops, at airport security. This will keep your hands free and make the security check far more efficient.

6. Travel Accessories:

If the duration of your initial transit is lengthy, then maybe consider packing a travel pillow, eye mask, and earplugs to help you sleep on the plane, or during long car or train rides. A small backpack or tote bag is also helpful for carrying your essentials on day trips. If you are resort based, you usually won’t need to carry your passport with you all the time since most Hotels have a safety deposit box in each room. Alternatively, they can safely store your documents in the reception if you prefer, however I would advise you add your phone number and keep your mobile with you in case of emergency.

7. Entertainment:

Pack a book, magazine, a journal to record your day, or an e-reader, to keep you entertained during downtime. You may also want to download movies or TV shows to watch on your phone or tablet. A quiet evening with a glass of wine, after a busy day exploring your new destination, reading your favorite book, I have found to be the ultimate relaxation for me. At the same time, I never bother taking more than 1 book with me, since I find it fascinating visiting bookstores in other countries, plus now we also have the much lighter option of various audio book apps that can follow you everywhere without the need of carrying much weight. Consider downloading some audio books and read while your eyes rest..!

8. Snacks:

Pack some snacks such as granola bars, trail mix, or fruit to keep you fueled during travel days. A bottle of water can be found everywhere, from mini markets or any airport shop, but the snack prices in some areas will surprise you and not always in a good way, especially on some budget flights. It’s a much better idea to have something you like with you before you leave home.

9. First Aid Kit:

The term First Aid Kit doesn’t necessarily mean you need to carry a whole pharmacy with you. Each one of us has different needs and since you know your body better than anyone, you should be the one to determine what you might need: Your daily medication if you have any, a box of painkillers, a travel bottle of antiseptic and a few band-aids can be ideal. In case you are taking specific medication for a condition, make sure that you know exactly the ingredients used for it. Other countries might not be using the same brands of medicines as the ones you are familiar with but, if you run out, they can often create one for you if you can provide them with the necessary prescription. Other things might be lozenges, or your go to cold treatment. My wife swears by Olbas Oil and never goes away without it. The most classic irritation while abroad often has travelers running for the nearest loo, so perhaps, if you know your gut can be vulnerable, something like Imodium and some rehydration sachets might be on your list!

10. Other Essentials:

A travel umbrella or pocket poncho, in case you are visiting areas that usually have rain, a reusable bottle for water, to reduce the use of plastic, and a travel adapter based on the country you are visiting can be the last things you should consider packing. Now, if you have planned to spend 7 days sunbathing but the weather decides to give you some rain, and you forgot your umbrella, then I suggest you find a comfortable spot with your book and enjoy the rain to the maximum!

Remember to pack smart and keep it light. Overpacking can make travel more stressful and cumbersome. Stick to the essentials and leave room for souvenirs and new experiences, and anything else you want or need, remember you can probably get the most appropriate version there!

With this guide, you should be prepared for whatever adventure lies ahead. I wish you safe travels!

P.S. Please do not forget to pack your smile! It is the most certain way to make doors open for you while abroad!!!
